Absent their top scorer Saturday at Okanagan College (OC) for their regular-season finale, the Capilano Blues showed they have the depth to win in a variety of ways by earning a 93-72 victory to complete the weekend sweep of the Coyotes.
CapU was without Tyrone Asenoguan Saturday as he was injured in the Friday contest. In his place, the Blues got a season-high 25 points from Ahmad Athman who was 4-of-5 from three-point range and 22 points from David Featherston who was highly efficient on 10-of-14 shooting.
The Coyotes actually led 30-28 after the opening frame Saturday but Athman helped the Blues overtake them for good in the second quarter with 12 points and the visitors took a 14-point advantage into halftime.
Zach Klim scored six in the third quarter and grabbed four of his game-high 13 rebounds as Capilano increased its lead. Josh Dhillon helped seal the deal with three of his five threes in the fourth quarter.
In Friday's opener, each Blues starter scored in double digits led by Asenoguan's 23, on the way to a 106-88 win. Klim scored a season-high 18 with 10 of those points coming in the third quarter. CJ Campbell and Featherston each had 14 while Dhillon had 11.
The Coyotes scored 30 in the second quarter and trailed by just three going to the second half but a dominant third frame from CapU gave them an 18-point lead that held up to the end.
Athman chipped in 11 points coming off the bench Friday and for the weekend, he was 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Toronto native has hit eight threes in his last four games, equaling what he'd done in the previous 14 games.
After a bye week, the Blues are headed to PACWEST provincials March 2 to 4 at Camosun College in Victoria. CapU has a slim chance at being the No. 2 seed but for that to happen, Camosun would have to lose both their games this weekend at Langara. Most likely, they will be the No. 3 seed and open in the quarterfinals against OC.
