3rd-year Maya Smith and rookie Sebastian Cirotto earn Athlete of the Week honours.
Maya Smith is the Capilano University Blues women’s Student-Athlete of the Week.
The third-year kinesiology student scored twice Sunday, getting both Blues goals in the second half to spearhead a come-from-behind effort that ended in a 2-2 draw.
With her side down a pair at the half, Smith took over in the second half, getting CapU on the board by driving home a loose ball off a Blues corner kick. Less than 10 minutes later, she capitalized on a Douglas turnover, raced forward and belted the tying goal into the top right corner.
Smith now leads the Blues with three goals on the season.
Sebastian Cirotto is the Capilano University Blues men’s Student-Athlete of the Week.
The rookie forward scored both Blues goals Saturday, securing a point against visiting Douglas College. Cirotto’s production allowed Capilano to erase deficits on two separate occasions.
After Douglas opened the scoring in the first half, Cirotto outran a Royals defender on a long ball and slotted home the 1-1 goal. With his team trailing again in the second half, Cirotto controlled a long corner kick before beating the Royals keeper inside the near post.
The brace represents Cirotto’s first two goals in Blues colours.
