Mya Fraser scored the game-winning goal for Capilano in Saturday's opener against the Douglas College Royals and Maya Smith authored a second-half comeback Sunday at Douglas that nabbed a point for the Blues.
Fraser's strike from outside the 18-yard box in the second half Saturday completed a comeback 2-1 win. A bouncing ball, the result of a Kai Belbin cross that was knocked down, found it's way to Fraser who unleashed a rocket of a shot that went top corner over the Douglas keeper.
The comeback was necessary Saturday as CapU conceded in the early going on an Alicia Skirzyk header but Blues rookie Kaitlyn Johnson scored her second of the season. After a corner kick from Julia Peyton was directed on goal by Lauren Grey, Johnson found the rebound and pushed it across the heavily defended Royals goal line to even the score.
The Royals opened the second half controlling the bulk of possession but, as they have shown to be in the early part of the PACWEST season, Capilano was opportunistic with Fraser the latest to take advantage of an opening in the opposition defences.
Mya Fraser - postgame vs. Douglas - Saturday, Sept. 16
On Sunday at Douglas, Royals goals in the eighth minute from Melisa Huarcaya and in the 22nd minute from Isabelle Dobbin - both drives from distance - had the home side in command early but Capilano closed the door after that, setting the stage for Smith's second-half heroics.
Smith got CapU on the board in the 63rd minute after another Peyton corner. Fraser made the initial touch with a header but Smith got the loose change and buried it high into the net. Just under 10 minutes later, Smith scored the equalizer when she took advantage of a Royals turnover and raced in on the Royals goal, finishing into the upper right corner.
CapU's record is now 3-0-1 which puts them atop the PACWEST standings.
The schedule has the Blues at home to Vancouver Island University on Saturday, Sept. 23 in a 1 p.m. start and they go back to Douglas the next day for a Noon kickoff.
