Unable to turn the tables after an opening-night setback, the Capilano Blues suffered the same result Saturday - a three-sets-to-one loss to the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats.
Making his Blues debut, Brazilian international Dario Pereira made an impact on Saturday's game but it was not enough to overcome a talented CBC side that made few errors on the weekend. Pereira delivered some punishing kills from a variety of attack points and also showed off a big serve. He totaled 20 kills for the game. Unfortunately, errors at key moments in the CapU service game proved costly on the night.
CBC took the opening set but Capilano responded in the second to make it 1-1. A thrillingly tight third set went the way of the Bearcats by a 25-23 count and they carried the momentum into the deciding fourth.
In Friday's season opener, despite winning the opening set, Capilano dropped the next three as they sustained a three-sets-to-one loss to CBC.
Second-year setter Jonah Violini directed the Blues offense nicely with eight assists in the opening set, allowing Trevor Matthysen and Isaiah Ohori to show off big swings on the attack. The pair of Blues hitters finished with 10 and nine kills respectively. Jakob Leinemann was also impressive in the middle, using his 6-foot-9 frame to alter the CBC attack. He ended up with nine kills on the night.
Undeterred after the opening-set loss, CBC rallied from that point forward including the third, where CapU was first to 20 points but the Bearcats managed to claw back and go up two sets to one. CBC's Noah Friesen tallied 17 kills on the night to lead all players.
Next weekend, Nov. 3 and 4, CapU hosts defending national champion Camosun College. Friday's game is an 8 p.m. start while Saturday's gets going at 3 p.m.
