For the third game in a row, the Capilano Blues took one of the top teams in PACWEST men's volleyball to full distance to a fifth set and once again, they fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the visiting College of the Rockies (COTR) Avalanche.
With another raucous pro-Blues crown on hand, the Blues looked sharp early again on Sunday, winning the first set before COTR grabbed the second frame. Capilano put themselves in position to earn their second win with a third-set victory but they couldn't take the one that counted.
Trevor Matthysen got back into double-digit kills Saturday with 12, a season-high. Marco Kost also took some big swings with 15 kills and five aces. The Blues had trouble with the COTR blockers all weekend and on Sunday, they ran into eight blocks to while managing just four of their own.
On Saturday, Capilano got out to quick starts in each of the first two sets and were up 2-0 before the Avalanche, who entered the game first place in the PACWEST and with only one loss on the season, found their game.
COTR's two Brazilian imports, Diego Policarpo and Gustavo Bertoli, each reached double-digit kills to rescue the win for the visitors.
The Blues got eight kills and five aces from Brendan Zebrynski while Dario Pereira registered 13 kills. Untimely service errors hurt the Blues in the late going as did the Avalanche blockers, who put up better resistance at the net as the game wore on.
Capilano is now into the exam and holiday break and are not back in action until Jan. 12, 2024 when they visit Columbia Bible College.
