Playing the first game at the 2024 CCAA National Championship, the Capilano Blues overcame some early nerves to claim a five-set win Wednesday afternoon (19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 15-12) over the Collège Lionel-Groulx Nordiques of Quebec.
The Blues dropped the opening set but rallied to claim the next two. The Nordiques forced it to a deciding fifth set where the Blues got out to a 9-1 lead and held on to win 15-12.
Nnya Mbaoma and Annika Kuznik led the attack with 14 kills and 13 kills respectively.
Performance from the service line was a big factor in Wednesday's match as the Nordiques committed 20 service errors to Capilano's five.
On the defensive side, five Blues players registered double-digit tallies in digs while Mbaoma had four solo blocks and middle Natalie Rourke had three.
Anika Gatto was named player of the match for Capilano with 17 digs and two assists.
