There had been an all-or-nothing results for the Capilano Blues all season as they either swept or got swept in each of their weekend series but they finally got one of each in the final games of the campaign.
CapU won 3-1 Friday night at the College of the Rockies (COTR) and dropped Saturday’s rematch by the same score.
Having secured the No. 3 seed for the PACWEST provincials after Friday’s win, coach John Swanson rested some of his mainstays on Saturday and used the depth of his bench. Maya Jovic took advantage with a season-best 10 kills on 23 swings and a .391 hitting percentage. The North Vancouver native also had eight digs and made no errors in the serve receive game.
Kris Young and Ella Andreola shared libero duties Saturday and each showed well on first touch. Young was flawless and made consistent passes for the setters while Andreola picked up five digs.
Sophie Yarish handled the setter role Saturday and was good at the service line as well with three aces. Makenna Hamilton-Jackson registered a season-high six kills.
In Friday’s opener, first-string setter Jayden Easingwood was on top of her game, handing out 47 assists and assisting on five blocks. Sibby Bos had a season-best 10 kills while serving up two aces.
Nnya Mbaoma was dominant Friday with 17 kills to match her season best. She also had an ace and three block assists.
CapU now heads into the PACWEST provincials and will face the host team Douglas College Royals in a semifinal matchup Friday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. The winners in the semifinals are going to nationals as the PACWEST has two berths this season.
