In a weekend that almost didn't happen, the Capilano Blues dug deep to come away with positive results after some trying times while traveling to Okanagan College (OC).
A chemical fire on the highway to Kelowna closed the road in both directions for several hours Friday as the Blues teams, travelling together in a charter bus, were en route to their road destination. What should have been about a five-hour trip turned into a 12-hour-plus ordeal with the Blues bus stuck roadside for much of it.
Games at Okanagan College originally scheduled for Friday-Saturday were instead played Saturday-Sunday. Kirsten Abo showed few ill effects from the taxing travel day as she hit a three and scored nine points in the opening quater against the Coyotes. Maddy Coffin also shot the ball well early and scored eight in the opening frame on her way to 17 for the game.
CapU sagged in the middle part of Saturday's game, picking up just 12 points in the second quarter while OC scored the ball well, including four threes in the second frame - two from Coti Lopez off the bench. Capilano finished strong in the final frame on the strength of 12 more points from Abo who ended up with 24 for the game but the second quarter proved the difference and the Blues couldn't close the gap in an eventual 75-70 loss.
On Saturday, the second quarter was again problematic as the Blues were just 2-of-5 from the field with no three-point attempts or free throws. Fortunately, Coffin scored the ball well off the opening tip with 10 points in the first and Abo again finished with a flourish, scoring 14 of her 22 in the second half. Sereena Hothi was key for Capilano Sunday, coming just shy of a double-double on 10 points and eight boards. Alanya Davignon had another full stat line with five points, four boards, two steals and an assist in 21 minutes off the bench.
Capilano will finally return home after three consecutive road weekends and a bye. The Blues host the 6-4 Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats in a Thursday-Friday set at CapU Nov. 23 and 24. Game times are 6 p.m. both nights.
