A three-pointer here, a layup there.
Either would have made all the difference for the Capilano Blues as they suffered two losses, each by just a point, to the visiting Camosun College Chargers Dec. 1 and 2 at CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness.
In both games, buckets by the Chargers in the final minute separated them from the Blues. In Friday's game, it was a Lucas Sheets layup with 55 seconds to go that proved to be the winning bucket while on Saturday, a three with 21 seconds to go from Cole Belton was the difference.
Capilano started strong Friday, building a nine-point first quarter lead on the strength of threes from Kash Lang and Arshya Ghasemi. Points were tough to come by all weekend for both sides in tightly contested affairs but the Blues maintained their lead Friday at halftime thanks to another three and a steal from Lang in the second quarter.
Camosun began their comeback out of halftime getting seven points from Noah Helman while holding the Blues to just 10 points which included another three from Lang. Ahmad Athman scored five of his nine on the night in the final frame but it was not enough as the Chargers had three different shooters hit threes. Sheets ended up with 13 points off the bench Friday which was more than all of the Blues reserves.
On Saturday, it was Capilano attempting to engineer the second-half comeback but they fell just short, unable to fully make up for a seven-point halftime deficit. Zach Klim's layup with just over three minutes to go put the Blues up 60-56 but it would be their final bucket of the night. Belton made a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining and then drilled the dramatic winning triple in the waning moments.
David Featherston Jr. returned to the lineup for the Blues after missing four weekends with injury and recorded 10 points and four boards over 27 minutes for the weekend.
The losses drop CapU to 5-7 for the first half of the schedule while Camosun improved to 10-2.
Capilano is back in action Jan. 12 and 13 with games at Langara College.
