Playing host to the defending CCAA and PACWEST champions from Camosun College this weekend, the Capilano Blues proved to themselves they can compete with top teams but need more execution on their own side if they are going to take wins from them.
Camosun claimed a three-sets-to-one win Saturday afternoon to take both ends of the PACWEST doubleheader.
The Chargers won the first two sets Saturday but CapU battled to take the third set and prolong the match. Chargers Norwegian international Edvard Adolfsen ended up with 10 kills and helped the visitors close out the match in the fourth set.
CapU was led in kills Saturday by Dario Pereira with 10 and he also picked up a block and two aces. Jakob Leinemann had eight kills and also registered a pair of blocks. Jonah Violini directed the Blues offence on the weekend at setter and also used his 6-foot-6 length at the net to pick up four blocks.
Brendan Zebrynski was one of four players on the Blues to register multiple kills as well as at least a block and an ace. Marco Kost, Leinemann and Pereira were the others.
On Friday night, an epic third set went deep into extra points before the Chargers grabbed the win at 32-30 to finish off a 3-0 win.
Making his first start for the Blues, German import Kost showed off a big lefthanded swing and recorded 11 kills and a pair of aces. Pereira, coming off a 20-kill showing against Columbia Bible College Oct. 28, was held to six kills Friday but he chalked up five aces.
Camosun, the reigning champs, showed impressive poise and resilience in the third set as Capilano led it 18-12 at one point before the Chargers rallied. The teams traded points all the way into the thirties with Camosun earning the win when a Leinemann swing sent the ball out of bounds.
The PACWEST schedule takes the Blues to Douglas College on Nov. 9 and 10. Both games are scheduled for 8 p.m. starts.
