The Capilano Blues built a 14-point halftime lead and managed to make it hold up over the final 20 minutes to claim a bronze medal at the PACWEST provincials with an 89-86 win over the Langara College Falcons.
Zach Klim went for 12 of his 21 on the night in the first half and pulled down four boards while Josh Dhillon also had a dozen on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
Helping keep the Blues in front by double digits in the first half was the fact that Langara guard and eventual tournament all-star Royce Sargeant had just four points in the first half. That all changed in the third quarter though as Sargeant went for 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the frame to help the Falcons reduce their deficit to just eight.
In the fourth quarter, he'd add seven more to finish with 25 on the night but CapU did enough to hang on. Klim finished strong with seven points and three boards in the final frame.
Capilano ended up in the bronze-medal game as a result of a tough 59-52 loss to eventual champion Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Friday's semifinal. In that contest, the Blues were 3-for-5 from the free throw line on the night while VIU was 18-for-23.
The bronze medal is the first for the Blues since the 2011 season.
