The Capilano Blues proved several things to themselves in their first win of the season Friday over the Douglas College Royals.
First, they showed they can win tight contests as the set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-22. Second, they showed they can win on the road and third, they demonstrated they can defeat top-ranked opponents as they upended the No. 6-rated team in Canada.
Marco Kost used his big left serve to the tune of seven aces and also put away eight kills to get the Blues in the win column Friday. He also got his hands on four blocks. Setter Jonah Violini also got Dario Pereira involved early and often, helping the Brazilian into double-digit kills while getting in on three blocks himself. Tate Wheatley recorded two aces, two blocks and a kill in the victory.
On Thursday at Douglas, playing their first road game of the season, CapU was withing striking distance of the host Royals the entire night but the home side did just enough to keep the Blues at bay.
Capilano served for set point in the third set, leading 25-24, but couldn't find the crucial kill to extend the match as the No. 6-ranked Royals took it in straight sets after taking the first two frames by identical 25-21 counts.
Next up, the Blues host Vancouver Island University Nov. 17 and 18. Start times are 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
