Hosting the Camosun College Chargers Saturday afternoon for the second game of a weekend doubleheader, the Capilano Blues dropped a set for the first time this season. And then they dropped another.
Facing the prospect of their first defeat this season, they showed impressive resolve in completing a comeback win in five sets to move to 4-0 on the campaign.
Despite not playing the first set, Nnya Mbaoma was instrumental in the comeback as she collected 15 kills over the final four sets. Capilano was also firm at the net, getting multiple blocks from each of Annika Kuznik, Sibby Bos and Natalie Rourke who got her hands on several Chargers attacks.
Service was a problem area for the Blues in the first set Saturday with seven service errors giving free points to Camosun. They tightened that aspect up significantly as the game wore on and got aces from Bos, Mbaoma and Jayden Easingwood.
Camosun got double-digit kills from Erica Bolink and Paige Roslinsky Saturday but CapU was able to limit the damage done by the rest of the Chargers lineup.
In Friday's opener, Mbaoma racked up 12 kills as the Blues won their third consecutive straight-sets result to start the season.
Capilano looked poised throughout the match as they hosted the defending PACWEST champions and though Chargers outside hitter Bolink scored 14 kills, the Blues contained the other Camosun hitters.
As they did opening weekend against Columbia Bible College, the Blues were tidy on first touch Friday and didn't give away a lot of free points on service errors. Kuznik scored seven kills while Vanesa Gatto had six.
Next up, the Blues play their first road games of the season Nov. 9 and 10 at Douglas College. Both games are 6 p.m. starts.
