Having pushed conference rivals Douglas and VIU to five sets in each of their previous two PACWEST weekends, it seemed like the Capilano Blues were on the verge of some good news.
They got that good news in a road sweep at Columbia Bible College Nov. 8 and 9, the first two wins of the season for the young Blues side.
In Friday’s opener, CapU actually dropped the first set despite five kills from Connor Collinson-Lea. Undeterred, the Blues rattled off three set wins in a row, evening the match in the second set behind four kills apiece from Kingsley Ndu and Xavier Masztak.
Reese Nowotny helped put the Blues in front after set three as he chalked up four kills and two blocks. Masztak was on a mission in the deciding fourth set as he went off for seven of his 15 kills.
Parsa Pakravan and Liam Martin split setter duties Friday, with the former recording 28 assists and the latter 12. They were able to get eight kills apiece for Collinson-Lea, Ndu and Nowotny.
Capilano dropped the opening set again on Saturday but continued to show resolve. They found themselves down two sets to one but claimed the fourth set in extra points and won the fifth set to 15 to complete the weekend sweep. Masztak totaled a season-best 20 kills on the night.
Avi Gill was a factor for the Blues Saturday, serving up three aces, two of which came as set-winning points. The second-year transfer and Surrey native also registered seven kills and two blocks.
CapU was exceptionally tidy on serve receive Saturday, with primary first-touch players Collinson-Lea, Masztak and Oli Westhaver combining for just two errors on 80 receptions.
The Blues have two weekends off before returning to action hosting College of the Rockies Nov. 29-30.
