Ajaypal Hayer broke out for 24 points in 29 minutes off the bench in a 98-65 win Saturday, helping the Capilano Blues to a weekend sweep on the road at Douglas College.
Since being added to the roster at the start of January, Hayer has chipped in each game but had by far his biggest night for CapU, hitting on 8-of-14 shots including a pair of threes and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. The 6-foot guard also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists while swiping three steals.
The Blues bench was highly productive Saturday, with Shakir Yakubu and Damein Coleman combining for 26 points and nine boards on the way to the Blues’ largest margin of victory on the season.
CapU built a 12-point edge after 10 minutes on the strength of three triples by Arshya Ghasemi and never looked back. They led by 16 at half and removed all doubt with a 33-point effort in the fourth quarter which included seven from Kash Lang and eight from Hayer
Friday’s opener had the Blues down six after 20 minutes but a productive third quarter and a dominant final frame allowed them to claim a 79-69 triumph.
Lang and Ghasemi each hit three from downtown Saturday while Russell Curley continued his run of strong play, recording a double-double on 16 points – all in the second half – and 13 boards.
The Blues held the Royals to just 12 points in the fourth quarter while Lang notched nine of his team-high 18 over the final 10 minutes.
With the pair of wins, CapU has now won three of their last four and sit third in the PACWEST standings at 9-7 with eight games remaining in the regular season.
Next up for the Blues is a pair of home games against the Langara College Falcons Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb.
Friday’s game is a special event as the Blues honour 50 years of Capilano basketball and will recognize alumni from men’s and women’s hoops during the games. Tipoff Friday is 8 p.m. while Saturday’s start is set for 7 p.m.
