Barcha Hnizdilova led the Capilano Blues in rebounds in four of the team’s first five games this season but hadn’t done so since Nov. 8
She seemed determined to reclaim her status as the Blues resident glass cleaner in CapU’s final two games before the exam and holiday break as she racked up 31 boards in a pair of road wins at Camosun College.
The international from Czechia was crucial for the Blues in a pair of low-scoring wins at Camosun. She played 38 minutes in a 67-54 win Friday, grabbing 15 rebounds to go along with three blocks and three assists.
On Saturday, she upped it to 16 rebounds and a double-double with 11 points while rejecting a season-high five shots in a 61-50 victory that puts CapU at 7-5 for the first half of the season.
Offence didn’t come as much for Hnizdilova on the weekend but the Blues were carried Friday by Maddy Coffin’s 24 points which included a trio of triples while Mia Parkin scored 19 while adding five assists. CapU was dominant in the first and fourth quarters Friday, with Parkin putting the nail in the Chargers coffin with 12 fourth-quarter points.
Saturday’s rematch saw Parkin fall just one rebound shy of a double-double while Mina Djordjevic came off the bench to provide six points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of work. A suffocating second quarter by the Blues defenders held Camosun to just eight points, allowing the visitors to take a 12-point lead to the break and maintain their distance in the second half.
While the PACWEST takes a breather for exams and the holidays, Capilano gets a chance to get healthy, hoping for Jenna Griffin and Teigan Manson to mend for 2025.
Next games for the Blues are Jan. 17 and 18 with the Columbia Bible College Bearcats coming to CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
