Chargers Overpower Blues 74-53 to Finish Regular Season
The Capilano University Blues struggled to find their rhythm on Saturday, falling 74-53 to the Camosun College Chargers in a challenging matchup. Despite a spirited effort, the Blues couldn’t overcome Camosun’s efficient shooting and strong defensive presence.
From the opening tip, the Chargers established control, leading 17-11 after the first quarter. The Blues managed to close the gap slightly in the second, outscoring Camosun 14-12, but still trailed 29-25 at halftime. Any momentum gained was quickly stifled in the third quarter, where the Chargers pulled away with a dominant 24-12 run. By the final buzzer, the deficit had widened to 21 points.
Shooting woes plagued the Blues throughout the game, as they finished with a field goal percentage of just 30.4% (21-69) and struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 18.5% (5-27) of their three-point attempts. In contrast, the Chargers were efficient, shooting 46.0% from the field and 40.0% from deep.
David Featherston Jr. led the Blues in scoring off the bench, contributing 12 points and grabbing six rebounds. Ahmad Athman added 10 points on 4-9 shooting, while Ajaypal Hayer chipped in another 10 points, including two makes from beyond the arc. Despite these efforts, the Blues’ starters struggled to produce consistently, with only Athman reaching double figures.
Turnovers were a mixed bag for Capilano. While they committed 13 turnovers, they capitalized on Camosun’s 17, scoring 21 points off those mistakes. However, missed opportunities in other areas—such as free throws (6-12) and second-chance points—proved costly.
Rebounding was another area where the Blues fell short, with Camosun holding a 41-35 edge on the boards. The Chargers also displayed superior ball movement, tallying 23 assists compared to Capilano’s 15.
Despite the tough loss, the Blues showcased moments of resilience, particularly from their bench, which outscored Camosun’s reserves 33-30. However, the inability to string together consistent offensive runs and defensive stops ultimately led to the defeat.
Looking ahead, the Blues will have an opportunity to bounce back at the 2025 PACWEST Provincial Championship. They’ll face the Douglas College Royals on February 27th at 8:00 pm, with the home-court advantage at Capilano University’s Centre for Sport and Wellness. With the season on the line, the Blues will aim to regroup and make a strong postseason push.
