Visiting the nationally No. 5-ranked Douglas College Royals, the Capilano Blues faced double-digit deficits at halftime of each game and came away with a pair of setbacks, moving their record to 7-9.
The Royals’ depth showed through as well as they were able to get 37 points off the bench in Friday’s 78-61 win, compared to just 11 for Capilano. On Saturday, Douglas scored 61 in the first half and received 47 points off the bench for the game while the Blues got only a couple of buckets from their reserves in an 89-71 final.
Capilano had a shot at the win Friday, trailing by just six going to the fourth quarter, but stalled out offensively in the final 10 minutes while the Royals pulled away led by Lauren Clements who scored nine of her game-high 23 in the final frame.
An encouraging point for the Blues was the play of Jenna Griffin who continues to work her way back from injury. The fourth-year guard started Friday and played 30 minutes, scoring 11 points along with five boards, two assists and two steals. Barcha Hnizdilova and Maddy Coffin were the Blues high scorers, each netting 13 with Hnizdilova fashioning a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Saturday’s game saw the Royals bust out for a huge first half, with Avnoor Waraich scoring 17 of her game-high 22 as the Royals built a 61-31 cushion after 20 minutes.
CapU chipped away in the third, with Coffin scoring nine of her 17, but the halftime deficit proved too much to overcome. Mia Parkin scored seven of her team-leading 21 in the fourth quarter Saturday but the Royals maintained their lead and ran their record to 13-3. Mina Djordjevic had one of her best games for the Bues, scoring nine and pulling down 10 rebound with three blocks.
Capilano has now dropped four in a row but have a chance to get back on track with home games Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 with Langara College (5-13) paying a visit to CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
Tipoff is 6 p.m. in Friday’s game, which will be a special night with the Blues honouring their basketball alumni and 50 years of Blues basketball. Saturday’s game will be a 5 p.m. start.
