The Capilano Blues and the CapU Department of Athletics and Recreation are pleased to announce Sue Soolsma as head coach of the women’s volleyball team.
Soolsma takes over the top job after the departure of John Swanson, who had to step away from the team in December for personal reasons.
A native of North Vancouver and a former Blues volleyball player, Soolsma has spent the previous two seasons working as an assistant with the Capilano women’s team. She also has extensive experience working with high school and club volleyball teams, most recently with BCO Volleyball Club’s female U18 program.
“It’s a thrill to lead this group of talented student-athletes and it will be fun to see how far we can go this season and into the future,” said Soolsma. “Our experience going to CCAA Nationals last year in Red Deer plus the influx of new talent we’ve had this season will be big assets for us as we make the push toward the PACWEST playoffs.”
The Blues currently carry a record of 5-5 at the midway point of the schedule. With three-straight wins before the exam and holiday break, Capilano is trending in the right direction and will try to get above the .500-mark Jan. 10 and 11 with games at Douglas College.
"I am very excited to see what Sue can do at the helm of this team,” said CapU Director of Athletics and Recreation, Georgette Reed. “Her passion and experience with this team makes her the right person for the job of leading these athletes to greater heights. Her deep regard for player development and enjoyment of the game excites me as she and her staff take this team in a positive direction."
Soolsma will make her Blues head coaching debut this weekend at Douglas and will coach her first games at CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness on Jan. 24 and 25 against Camosun.
