With a pair of wins on the longest road trip of the season, the Capilano Blues have won seven matches in a row to move all alone into second in the PACWEST standings.
Capilano downed the College of the Rockies (COTR) Avalanche both Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Cranbrook after a 12-hour plus bus ride to get there.
In a four-set win Friday (set scores 22-25, 25-22,25-14, 25-22), Nnya Mbaoma keyed the Blues victory, hitting a robust .341 while putting away 22 kills and she had three aces. Returning to her home part of the province, Abby Betker had 10 kills and led the team with 14 digs.
Rookie setter Mollie English again was impressive, dishing out 43 assists and catching the COTR defence unaware a couple of times with two kills.
The Blues had enough left in the tank to turn around Saturday afternoon and go the distance, a five-set win where two of the sets went to extra points (25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 24-26, 18-16).
English had her fingerprints all over the Blues attack Saturday as she picked up an astonishing 57 assists to give her an even 100 on the weekend. Betker and Mbaoma went for 20 and 17 kills respectively while English was also able to get double-digit kills for middle blockers Natalie Rourke (10) and Sibby Bos (11).
Mbaoma was outstanding on serve receive all weekend for the Blues as she handled 90 first touches to near perfection, getting her teammates immediately into system for big swings and kill numbers.
Next up for the Blues is a Friday-Saturday home set Jan. 24-25 against Camosun College. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness.
