The Langara Falcons secured a pivotal victory over the Capilano Blues 77-75 in what could be a first-round playoff matchup, depending on how the rankings shake out. The Blues are now tied in points with the Falcons at 18 and still have two games in hand. The energy in the gym was infectious, with both the soccer and volleyball teams showing their support, adding to the intensity of the packed student section. The evening also marked Alumni Night, with past players joining in the festivities and enjoying the beer garden, further elevating the atmosphere of the gym.
Capilano started slow, finding themselves down midway through the first quarter, but the Blues quickly found their defensive footing. Big blocks in the first two quarters had the crowd roaring, with the energy from the stands lifting the team back into the game. By halftime, the Blues had fought back to a narrow 33-31 lead. The second half saw more of the same back-and-forth battle, with the Blues hitting some key 3-point shots to pull ahead later in the game. The end of the game felt like a playoff matchup, with both teams exchanging points, and tensions began to flair. Discussion commenced between the Falcons players and the Blues supporters, with the fans trying to do everything in their power to help their team edge forward.
In the dying seconds, it was Kash Lang who gave his team a chance, hitting a massive 3-pointer to come within one point of the Falcons, but unfortunately, time expired, leaving the Blues in the dust. Lang finished the game with 20 points, 12 of those being in the second half, and rookie Ajaypal Hayer produced 15 points in the matchup. Damien Coleman was big in the paint, registering 10 rebounds. The Blues will need more point production from their bench tomorrow if they want to secure the win.
The Blues are back in action tomorrow for a rematch against Langara at 7 pm, where they hope to bounce back from today's tough loss. We hope to see you there!
