Results have been all or nothing so far for the Capilano Blues but they got a bit of everything in their most recent action, a split on the road at Columbia Bible College.
A sweep at the hands of Camosun opened the 2024-25 campaign, followed by a CapU sweep of Douglas. Then it was two losses at Vancouver Island University but at CBC, the highs and lows showed through for the Blues season so far.
Capilano ended up with a split against the Bearcats, and came agonizingly close to taking both matches, but for a lack of ability to close things out on the first night.
The Blues were within a point of winning the fifth and deciding set, up 14-11 with the ball in their hands. A service error and a Bearcats block prompted a CapU timeout but the home side continued its stand and ended up taking five straight points to win the set 16-14, handing the Blues their fifth loss of the season.
It was a tough result to swallow, given double-digit kills for each of Nnya Mbaoma, Abi Betker and Annika Kuznik. They were set up well by Mollie English who recorded a season-best 41 assists but the good was undone by 31 attacking errors, which led to a .120 kill percentage.
Still, there was a game to play less than 24 hours later and Capilano gets credit for rebounding to score a 3-1 win Saturday and salvage the weekend.
Sibby Bos hit a robust .389 Saturday, with 10 kills on 18 swings from the middle. Mbaoma turned in a season high 17 kills and English reached the 40-assist mark for the second night in a row while also registering three blocks and three aces.
CapU needed extra points in winning the first and third set and took the clinching fourth set on a CBC service error.
The Blues have two weekends off and return to action Nov. 29 and 30 at home, hosting College of the Rockies.
