The Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball team faced a tough Vancouver Island Mariners side, falling in three straight sets (18-25, 20-25, 19-25). With both teams sitting at the top of the PACWEST standings and VIU just ahead of the Blues in first place. This weekend's matchup carries significant weight as the Blues aim to gain confidence heading into playoffs next week.
The gym was packed with many families joining in the action, even some coming from out of town to catch the last games of the season.
This match also marked senior night for 5th-year Maya Jovic. Following the game, there was a ceremony to honour Jovic, as she's been a key piece of leadership for the Blues through her time at Capilano. Judging by the smiles during her senior night ceremony, it's clear Jovic has had a big impact on her teammates throughout her time with the Blues. Many of her family, friends, teachers and the team she coaches were in attendance supporting from the stands, which made for a very special night for the 5th-year graduate.
Despite the loss tonight, the Blues fought hard, and although the Mariners took the game in straight sets, the Blues showcased their fight and talent. With next week’s provincial championships in Nanaimo right around the corner, the team remains focused on the bigger goal. The Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow for their final performance before Provincials, where they could very well be playing against VIU again if they make the finals.
Maya Jovic ended with 4 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace on her big night, putting up big minutes for her team. Other key performers were Natalie Rourke with 6 kills and 1 ace as well as Nnya Mbaoma with 7 kills and 2 blocks. They will be key assets for the Blues in Provincials next week.
Tomorrow, the Blues host the Mariners at 1 pm for their last game of the regular season!
Come support your Blues for the last time at home!
