Blues Bounce Back with Dominant 90-53 Win Over Chargers
The Capilano University Blues roared back in style, defeating the Camosun College Chargers 90-53 in a commanding performance less than 24 hours after a tough 15-point loss to the same team. The emphatic victory not only evened the weekend series but also showcased the Blues' resilience and ability to respond under pressure.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
Capilano came out firing on all cylinders, putting up 29 points in the opening quarter while limiting Camosun to 18. The Blues’ offense was fluid and efficient, highlighted by sharp ball movement that led to high-quality shots. By halftime, Capilano held a 44-33 advantage, but it was in the second half where they truly pulled away.
Dominant Second Half
The Blues outscored the Chargers 46-20 in the second half, including a 23-7 third quarter that all but sealed the game. Their defense intensified, forcing Camosun into 33 turnovers, which Capilano converted into 34 points. The pressure on both ends of the floor left the Chargers scrambling for answers.
Standout Performances
Maddy Coffin led the charge with an efficient 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Barcha Hnizdilova stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals, while Mia Parkin added 15 points and four assists.
The Blues’ depth also shone through, with the bench contributing 24 points. Sereena Hothi was a key spark, tallying 12 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes.
Statistical Edge
Capilano’s shooting efficiency played a major role in the win, hitting 43.8% from the field and 40% from three-point range. They dominated the free-throw line, converting 24-of-32 attempts compared to Camosun’s 1-of-2.
While Camosun held a slight edge in rebounds (39-37), Capilano’s superior ball movement (25 assists) and defensive pressure (22 steals) turned the tide. The Blues’ largest lead ballooned to 37 points late in the fourth quarter, a testament to their relentless play.
Senior's Night
The Blues also took a few moments to celebrate a special student-athlete who, this weekend, finished her home-court career as a Blue and exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete, Jenna Griffin.
Jenna, congratulations on an outstanding career!
Looking Ahead
With the win, the Blues gain momentum heading into the 2025 PACWEST Provincial Championship. They’ll face the Langara Falcons on February 27th at 5:30 pm, with the tournament hosted at Capilano University’s Centre for Sport and Wellness.
