In a hard-fought matchup at Vancouver Island University, the Capilano University Blues fell short against the VIU Mariners, losing 79-70 in a game that showcased intensity on both ends of the court. Despite leading early in the first quarter and a valiant effort from their starters, the Blues couldn’t maintain their edge against the Mariners’ balanced attack and efficient shooting.
Blues Battle but Struggle with Efficiency
The game started promisingly for Capilano, who held a two-point lead just over a minute into the game. However, the Mariners took control in the second quarter and never looked back, building their largest lead of 13 points midway through the third. Despite keeping the game within reach, the Blues were hampered by a tough shooting night, converting only 34.2% of their field goals and a mere 18.2% from beyond the arc.
Capilano’s starting lineup shouldered much of the scoring load. Ahmad Athman led the Blues with 16 points and eight assists, showcasing his playmaking abilities despite a tough 6-of-18 shooting night. Damein Coleman delivered a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, dominating on the glass. Kash Lang added 14 points and six rebounds but also struggled from the field, shooting 5-of-13.
Bench production was a bright spot for the Blues, contributing 24 points, compared to just eight from the Mariners’ reserves. Zach Klim led the charge off the bench with 12 points on an efficient 6-of-11 shooting, injecting energy into Capilano’s attack when the starters needed a boost.
Mariners Capitalize on Opportunities
The Mariners’ efficiency proved the difference. They shot 44.8% from the field and a solid 76.9% from the free-throw line, making 20-of-26 attempts compared to Capilano’s 12-of-19. VIU’s ability to convert free throws and capitalize on turnovers—despite committing 23 themselves—helped keep Capilano at bay.
Though the Blues edged the Mariners in assists (19-16) and matched them in points off turnovers, they struggled to generate second-chance opportunities, managing just six points on the offensive glass.
Looking Ahead
The Blues, now looking to regroup, will turn their attention to next weekend’s matchup against the Camosun College Chargers in Victoria, BC. With a chance to refine their offensive execution and build on strong individual performances, Capilano will aim to bounce back against their PACWEST rivals.
For the Blues, tightening up their shooting and cutting down on turnovers will be crucial as they prepare to face the Chargers on the road.
Another gritty effort for the guys, but they come up just short.
