After a heartbreaker of a setback Friday night at Columbia Bible College (CBC), the Capilano Blues showed determination in Saturday's rematch, a resounding victory to come away with a split with the Bearcats.
It was a Clive Adams three-pointer with just a second remaining that won it for the Bearcats on Friday in a 74-71 final. CBC took a six-point lead to half time Friday, led by Spencer Dododza's 9 points, eight boards and two blocks over the first 20 minutes.
The Bearcats did just enough to hang on in the second half. Kash Lang scored nine of his 20 on the night in the third quarter, helping the Blues cut the Bearcats lead down to two going to the final frame where he added five more. Former Bearcat Damein Coleman got six points in the fourth on a pair of threes and CapU tied the game 71-71 with just inside a minute to go on a layup by Ahmad Athman.
Cam Carter, who played 23 minutes off the bench for the Bearcats, scored 10 off his 11 on the night in the fourth and was pivotal in the winning bucket. Coming out of a CBC timeout with 23 seconds left, the Bearcats used almost the whole clock and Carter found Adams who hit the triple to win it.
Coming back Saturday, Capilano left nothing to chance as they were dominant in the first half, building 50-33 edge at the break with Athman scoring 10 of his eventual 16 on the night and Russell Curley coming off the bench to hit a pair of threes on his way to 11 points and nine boards.
The Blues increased their advantage in the third quarter with Lang scoring seven of his 17. He led the Blues in scoring both nights and also had a career-high eight dimes Saturday.
Sukhraj Garcha chipped in a season-best eight points in 18 minutes off the bench including a pair of threes.
Next up for the Blues is a home weekend with PACWEST-leading Vancouver Island University (8-0) paying a visit to North Vancouver. Tip off Friday is 8 p.m. and Saturday's game is a 3 p.m. start.
