With a road win at Langara College Saturday and a home triumph over Vancouver Island University (VIU) Sunday, the Capilano Blues are 3-1 on the 2024 PACWEST season and have equaled their win total from a year ago.
Saturday at Langara’s home park, the Blues withstood a first half attack by the Falcons that saw the home side dominate possession but take just a 1-0 lead to halftime.
After some adjustments, the second half was a different story from CapU as they pushed back and got the tying goal from Sebastian Cirotto who volleyed home a loose ball from the edge of the 18-yard box after a Luca Dal Sasso free kick.
Captain Tommy Millar would score the winner, his first Blues goal, on a blind backwards header that beat the Falcons keeper after a long throw in by Eric Town.
In the 72nd minute, Jeremy Monn-Djasngar ran onto a ball from Stefano Dal Sasso, capitalizing after a Falcons turnover in midfield, and put away a left-footed blast to put CapU up a pair.
On Sunday at home to VIU, the Blues had a lightning-quick start with Monn-Djasngar scoring in the third minute, again left footed after a long throw in from Town. Shortly after, a long goal kick from Brandon Lecce bounced past the VIU midfield and Monn-Djasngar was back at work, forcing a save from the VIU keeper which rebounded to Cirotto who tidily tucked it home.
That would be all the Blues scoring for the afternoon. Their defensive structure was tested and conceded in the 55th minute and the strain was increased when Riley Marshall was sent off in the 64th minute for a second yellow card. VIU pressed their advantage and were awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute but Lecce stood tall in the Blues net, making a diving stop to his right, thrilling the Blues supporters in attendance.
Next up for the Blues is a rematch with VIU on Saturday, Sept. 21 in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. On Sunday, the Blues are home to Douglas College for a 2:30 start.
