The Capilano University Blues came up short against the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Saturday night, falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22). Despite a strong start and resilient play throughout, the Blues couldn't overcome COTR's consistent pressure.
Capilano began the match on a positive note, taking the first set 25-23. It was a tightly contested battle, with both teams trading points until the Blues managed to pull away in the final moments. First-year outside hitter Xavier Masztak led the offense with several key kills, helping Capilano establish an early lead in the match.
The second set saw the Avalanche respond with a more controlled performance, using their offensive rhythm to secure a 25-20 win. The Blues showed flashes of strong play, but COTR's defense and efficient attacking proved difficult to counter.
The third set was a nail-biter. The Avalanche led for most of the set, but the Blues mounted a late comeback to tie it at 24-24. However, COTR closed the set with a powerful kill followed by a decisive block, winning 26-24 and taking a crucial 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, Capilano started strong, building an early advantage. However, the Avalanche found their footing midway through, taking control and holding off the Blues' attempts to force a fifth set. Despite contributions from setter Avi Gill (11 kills) and outside hitter Connor Collinson-Lea (9 kills), the Blues fell 25-22, sealing the 3-1 victory for COTR.
Capilano will now turn their attention to the second half of the season, with their next match scheduled for January 10th against Douglas College in New Westminster.
