The Capilano University Blues faced a tough road test this weekend, falling to the Douglas College Royals in consecutive straight-set matches in New Westminster, BC. Despite valiant efforts, the Blues were unable to match the Royals’ attacking efficiency, losing 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23) on Friday and 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-21) on Saturday.
Friday Recap
The Blues struggled to find their rhythm in the series opener, posting an attack percentage of .039 compared to Douglas’ .316. After dropping the first two sets by identical scores of 25-15, Capilano pushed back in the third, narrowly falling 25-23.
Capilano’s offense came alive late, with standout efforts from Kingsley Ndu, who recorded six kills on a .385 hitting percentage, and Xavier Masztak, who contributed seven kills and 8.5 points. However, the team’s -.250 hitting percentage in the first set set a difficult tone for the evening.
Douglas, meanwhile, was clinical, particularly in the third set, where they hit .471. Despite improved blocking and defensive adjustments from Capilano, the Royals’ balanced attack proved too much to handle.
Saturday Recap
Saturday’s rematch saw the Blues improve their offensive performance but still fall short. The Royals capitalized on Capilano’s early struggles, dominating the first set 25-13. The second set showcased the Blues’ grit, as they clawed back from multiple deficits to force extra points before falling 26-24.
Simon Russo and Kai Haley Lo Yan stepped up for the Blues, combining for nine kills on the night, while Masztak added nine kills and 11.5 points. Capilano’s serving woes—11 service errors to just two aces—hampered their momentum, particularly in crucial stretches.
Douglas’ offense cooled slightly compared to Friday, with a .172 hitting percentage overall, but they were able to capitalize on Capilano’s errors and outlast the Blues in extended rallies.
Looking Ahead
The Blues will aim to rebound next weekend as they head to Cranbrook, BC, for a pair of matches against the College of the Rockies Avalanche. With adjustments on both ends of the court, Capilano hopes to regain the form that has earned them success in previous outings.
Key Stats:
- Friday: Capilano hit .039 compared to Douglas’ .316.
- Saturday: Capilano improved to .089 but still lagged behind Douglas’ .172.
- Top Performers: Xavier Masztak (16 kills across both matches) and Kingsley Ndu (10 kills, 13.5 points).
The Blues remain optimistic about their ability to bounce back and deliver a stronger showing on the road.
