A pair of outside hitters earn Athletes of the Week recognition.
Nnya Mbaoma is the Indigo Park Canada Capilano University Blues women's Athlete of the Week.
The fifth-year outside hitter was a force for the Blues in both contests, totalling 32 kills for the weekend.
In Friday’s opener, Mbaoma racked up 17 kills on 30 swings for an eye-popping 56.7 hitting percentage while also recording five aces.
Coming back Saturday, the Nanaimo product had 15 more kills for a total of 32 on the weekend as Capilano came back from two sets down to win the match and the weekend.
Mbaoma’s performance helped the Blues defeat VIU for the first time since Feb 9, 2017, and it was the first time the Blues had ever swept the Mariners.
Luke Tiegen is the Indigo Park Canada Capilano University Blues men’s Athlete of the Week.
The 6-foot-9 outside hitter racked up 29 kills over two matches as the Blues didn’t drop a set to VIU on their way to a weekend sweep of the visiting Mariners.
On Friday, Tiegen went for 14 kills plus an ace and put up 15 more kills with an ace and a block Saturday to help the Blues complete a perfect weekend.
Tiegen’s formidable presence at the pins helped Capilano to their first sweep of VIU since 2013.
