Having dropped Friday night’s opening game of the weekend at Okanagan College (OC) and trailing by nine going to the second half of Saturday’s finale, the Capilano Blues responded with a decisive third quarter to claim a 94-87 win and make for a more enjoyable trip home.
The Blues went on a 29-10 romp in the third frame Saturday, led by 10 points from Peter Li as part of a 14-point afternoon for the point guard. He was well supported by Kash Lang who potted seven of his career-best 32 in the third quarter and Zach Hamed who hit two of his five threes.
It was an emphatic statement from a gutsy Blues team that was playing without veteran centre Zach Klim. Taking his spot in the starting lineup for the weekend was first-year Spanish international Alfonso Reyes, who registered 12 points and eight boards Saturday after going for 22 and 18 in Friday’s setback. Reyes secured four boards and one bucket during Saturday’s third-quarter comeback, providing tough defence to quiet OC leading scorer Phil Holmes Jr. who scored just one point in the third on his way to 23 for the game.
Capilano helped themselves with an 11-for-33 showing from three-point land, including five triples for Hamed and four from Lang.
In Friday’s game, the Blues were just 6-for-30 from downtown but were still tied 68-68 heading to the fourth quarter. CapU’s offence stalled out over the final 10 minutes, with only Lang and Sukhraj Garcha able to make buckets. The Blues leaned heavily on their starters Saturday with Anthony Tamburrino the only reserve to score. Josh Vandevelde contributed five boards and two dimes.
The PACWEST schedule is now going into its final weekend before the exam and holiday break.
The Blues host Columbia Bible College (CBC) Nov. 28 and 29. The Friday game is an 8 p.m. start while Saturday sees a 7 p.m. tipoff.
