CapU Blues sports info
With two more wins this past weekend, a Friday-Saturday sweep at Columbia Bible College, the Capilano Blues are a win away from securing top spot in the PACWEST standings and a No. 1-seed for the provincial tournament.
The Blues took Friday's opener in four sets, dropping the second stanza, and used the minimum three sets to get the job done on Saturday. The pair of victories move's CapU's record to 15-1, which is 10 points up on second-place Vancouver Island University (VIU) though VIU has two games in hand. Another win for Capilano would ensure VIU could not overtake them in the wins category and the Blues have the tie-breaker having won three of the four head-to-head matchups with VIU.
On Friday at CBC, Abby Betker was a force of nature for the Blues with 18 kills and two aces while getting in on four blocks. The fourth-year outside hitter posted a robust .425 hitting percentage, making just one attacking error on 40 swings. Betker was at ease taking sets from both Mollie English and Alix Schewaga, who shared setter duties Friday registering 18 and 14 assists apiece.
Annika Kuznik contributed a well-rounded game with six kills, three aces, eight digs and two blocks while Sibby Bos' five aces accounted for a third of the Blues total on the night.
On Saturday, Nnya Mbaoma totaled 13 kills, combining with Betker for 30 put-aways in the match as the Blues hit for a combined .320 percentage. Other highlights included a pair of aces for Natalie Rourke and three stuff blocks for Bos.
Capilano has a bye this coming weekend and is back in action Feb. 6-7 with a trip to Camosun College.
