Hoping to enjoy some home cooking with back-to-back matches at Lillooet Park, the Capilano Blues (3-4-1 PACWEST) instead remain hungry for goals after a second-straight clean sheet defeat, a 1-0 result Sunday to the first-place Langara College Falcons (6-1-1).
Sunday’s result came after sustaining a 2-0 setback to Douglas College on Saturday.
There wasn’t much difference between the two sides featured in the weekend finale with the game scoreless at halftime.
Capilano got a great look to open the scoring early in the second half when Sebastian Cirotto turned a long Stefano Dal Sasso throw-in into a quality chance with a venomous lofted strike from 25 yards out that looked destined for the back of the net if not for an acrobatic diving save by Falcons keeper Ziyan Clark-Ismail.
A pair of corner kicks came after Cirotto’s chance but the best look was a Zach Gabrys header attempt off a Tommy Millar delivery that bounced high but not on goal.
It was just moments later that Langara got the winner off the foot of Kazuki Nakanishi. A long drop kick by Clark-Ismail bounced past a herd of bodies in midfield before Nakanishi controlled it, made a clever stop-and-start maneuver to his right and placed a low drive just inside the right post.
Attempts to equalize didn’t produce the desired results for the Blues. Their best look came on a corner in the 78th minute when Millar’s delivery one-hopped its way to Cirotto on the far post but his side volley was handled by Clark-Ismail.
Capilano has the week to regroup and get ready for a home-and-home weekend against Douglas College. The Saturday, Oct. 4 game is a 3:30 p.m. start at Douglas while Sunday’s rematch is 2:30 p.m. kickoff at the Blues’ Lillooet Park.
