Abby Betker is the CCAA Player of the Year.
The Capilano Blues’ fourth-year outside hitter was rewarded for her outstanding 2025-26 campaign with the CCAA’s top individual honour at the national championship awards banquet held Mar. 10 at Providence University College, the host of this year’s national championship.
Betker led the Blues with 282 kills and her 3.81 kills per set was tops in the PACWEST. The 5-foot-11 native of Kimberley, B.C. contributed 0.42 blocks per set and her 4.51 average of total offence per set was second in the conference. Betker honed her game to become an effective passer this season under coach Sue Soolsma, keeping the Blues in system on offence with her effective first-touch capability.
“In addition to being a key player on our team, Abby has brought something just as important in her team-first attitude,” said Soolsma. “She knows what she means to our team, but she is just as happy to see her teammates excel. Abby has improved the areas of her game that weren’t strong last year, becoming a reliable passer and back-row player.”
For her efforts this season, Betker was named PACWEST Player of the Year, a CCAA All-Canadian, a First-Team Conference All-Star, and the league’s Top Outside Hitter.
The kinesiology student is the first Capilano student-athlete to take the CCAA Player of the Year award since Keith Jackson did so with men’s soccer after the 2018-19 season.
Overall, this is the ninth time a Blues player has earned the CCAA nod and the third time for women’s volleyball after Jennifer Dickson (2007) and Karlee Diesing (2009).
