Wearing retro uniforms that last saw action during a 17-win season in 2016-17, the current Capilano Blues went one better, earning their record-setting 18th win of the campaign with a comfortable straight-sets victory (set scores: 25-13, 25-10, 25-17) on Friday over the visiting College of the Rockies (COTR) Avalanche.
Abby Betker came out swinging and put away five of her eventual 14 kills in the first set as Capilano set the tone for the evening with a quick and tidy frame.
The middle set featured a pair of kills each from middle blockers Natalie Rourke and Sibby Bos, while Nnya Mbaoma chalked up three aces as the Blues took it by a 15-point margin.
The Avalanche fared a bit better in the third set with middle blocker Kayla Brasok tallying five kills, but the Blues were never in danger. Any Avalanche swings that did deliver the ball past the Capilano blockers were mostly handled by Monica Hoffman and Kris Young, who shared libero duties.
Betker posted five more put-aways in the third set while Mbaoma had three of her nine on the night to close out the match. Capilano’s veteran presence showed up at the net, recording seven blocks as a team to COTR’s two.
Capilano has secured the No. 1 seed for the PACWEST provincial championship tournament, which will be Feb. 27-28 at Columbia Bible College. For COTR, now sitting at 6-13 in conference play, they would need to defeat Capilano on Saturday and hope that Camosun completes a sweep at Douglas in order to qualify for the postseason.
The Saturday rematch for the Blues and Avalanche starts at 4 p.m. at CapU’s Centre for Sport and Wellness. After the women’s match, the seven graduating players from the women’s team will be honoured in a special ceremony.
