In the ebbs and flows of their season, the Capilano Blues recent returns had them feeling they were swimming against the current but turned the tide back in their favour with a Saturday win that split their weekend at Columbia Bible College (CBC).
The Blues, now 8-8 on the season, dropped the Friday opener at CBC in what was their third loss in a row after being swept at Vancouver Island University Jan. 16-17. They managed to put their latest results behind them in an impressive 3-1 win Saturday that got them back in the win column and back to the .500 mark for the season.
Second-half recruit Kyle Hinchey, who joined the Blues just at the start of January, was instrumental in Saturday's victory. The 6-foot-7 outside hitter did a bit of everything for the Blues on both sides of the game Saturday as he put away double-digit kills and was dominant in Capilano's blocking game, getting his hands on several CBC attacks.
Saturday's win was a test of the Blues' mettle and they showed strong team character after they went the full five sets in Friday's tight loss. CBC, despite their sixth-place standing in the PACWEST table, has been a scrappy group all season and was full credit for earning their third win of the season in the weekend opener. Brandon Sekhon piled up 26 kills for the Bearcats and Liam Sampson had 20, the pair set up well for success by setter Luke Funk who registered 51 assists.
Capilano's offence Friday featured a diverse attack with Hinchey and Luke Tiegen combining for 17 kills. The Blues middle blockers were effective with Quentin Middleton and Reese Nowotny putting away 10 and six kills respectively. Middleton also got in on six blocks Friday.
Setters Liam Martin and Brayden Labossiere each took turns running the offence Friday, posting 25 and 10 assists respectively.
The Blues have a bye this coming weekend but remain on the road Feb. 6-7 at Camosun College in Victoria.
