The Capilano Blues (1-6-1 PACWEST) capped what was their best weekend of soccer with a point after a nil-nil draw Sundy afternoon against the visiting Langara College Falcons (4-2-2).
Given their edge in possession and their 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, Capilano deserved a better fate Sunday. Kaitlyn Johnson made several threatening runs on right wing and almost opened the scoring in the 35th minute when she got onto a long pass from Kianna Sardari and unleashed a laser that Falcons goalie Kate Bonozew could only deflect over the bar.
Lauren Grey got her head on the corner kick that followed from Kai Belbin but her effort popped over the net.
The Blues kept the pressure up to open the second half. With some smart passing in midfield, Belbin got the ball to Bryn Chubb who threaded a beautiful through ball for Sasha Faris but her shot was swallowed up by Bonozew.
Undeterred, Capilano kept the pressure on through to the final whistle with Meghan Ferguson delivering a corner kick curling to the back post in the 89th minute that didn't quite fall the right way for Leah Herald.
In injury time, Capilano pushed forward again with a Johnson cross finding its way to an open Vienna Gabel for a last-gasp blast but Bonozew again was equal to the task.
Rachel Laakmann smothered a tricky bouncing shot right in the Blues goal area before the game's conclusion to preserve the clean sheet, her second of the season.
Capilano remains alive in the PACWEST standings but has a massive weekend looming, a home-and-home set Oct. 4 and 5 against the third-place Douglas College Royals. The Blues visit Douglas Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff and host the Royals Sunday in a noon start.
