A pair of goals less than seven minutes apart in the first half proved to be more than enough for les Nomades de Montmorency on their way to a 3-0 win over the Capilano Blues Thursday at the CCAA National Championship.
Still trying to shake off the disappointment of Wednesday's quarter-final loss in penalty kicks to the University of King's College, the Blues had trouble maintaining possession and generating offence in the early going. Montmorency got goals from Ilyas Mardi in the 13th minute and Gabriel René in the 19th minute to put themselves in command.
Capilano came on and had a better second half, matching les Nomades in shots on goal over the final 45 minutes and working their way to three corner kicks as well, though they were unable to convert.
Marco Toppa put the finishing touch on the game for Montmorency with a goal as the game approached its 70th minute.
A positive note for the Blues was the return of veteran defender Riley Marshall who was slowed by injury late in the year and missed the PACWEST provincials altogether. The fourth-year found his place again on the back line and played almost the full 90 minutes.
Aydin Ali, who assisted on the Blues goal Wednesday, played the entire game and generated some offensive chances. Tommy Millar and Tate Davidson were the other Blues credited with shots on goal.
Capilano will play the CMU Blazers of Manitoba on Friday in a start time of 7 a.m. PST.
