The Capilano University Blues defended home court in North Vancouver on Friday, seizing control early and never letting go. Behind a commanding 27–12 opening quarter, Capilano built a lead that ballooned to 27 points late in the third, setting the tone for a confident win.
From tip-off, the Blues dictated the pace and defended with purpose, forcing 27 Camosun turnovers and converting them into 30 points. While shooting percentages were nearly identical between the teams (Capilano 31.6% FG, Camosun 31.8% FG), the Blues’ ability to capitalize on mistakes and finish inside proved decisive. Capilano held a 20–8 advantage in points in the paint and out-assisted the Chargers 15–8.
Capilano showcased impressive depth, with all 10 players scoring at least three points. Forward Maddy Coffin paced the Blues with 13 points and 11 rebounds, her strong presence on the glass helping to steady the offense. Barcha Hnizdilova added 12 points and 10 rebounds for a sturdy double-double of her own, while Mia Parkin contributed a well-rounded performance with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and six steals in 39 minutes.
The bench kept the energy high, combining for 20 points. Cassiel Penalosa (5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) disrupted passing lanes, and Olivia Rozinsky and Alanna Schieman chipped in timely buckets to maintain separation. With a comfortable lead in hand, head coach Chris Weimer was able to rotate freely; every player logged at least nine minutes.
After leading 39–25 at halftime, Capilano held Camosun to just six points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Though the Chargers closed the night with a 22–10 fourth quarter, the deficit was too much to overcome.
The Blues dominated key statistical margins—most notably points off turnovers (30–11) and rebounding nearly even (40–41)—ensuring the early surge held firm despite a late Camosun push.
Capilano will look to carry its momentum into a quick turnaround, returning to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a rematch against the Chargers.
