After trading buckets with the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats through the first half, the Capilano Blues played lock-down defence in a decisive third quarter to pave the way to a 95-81 home win.
Zach Klim led the Blues coming out of halftime with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting with he and his teammates holding CBC to just two buckets over during a five-minute stretch that saw the home side go from down 47-45 to leading 57-51.
Capilano made the eight-point advantage hold up over the final 10 minutes and put an exclamation point on the night when they got a big two-handed dunk from Anthony Tamburrino to go up 14 and force a CBC timeout.
Rookied 6-foot-8 forward Daniel Abkenar also impressed in the fourth, scoring 10 points in six minutes on 5-of-7 shooting, while also making a beautiful pass over the final CBC defender leading to Tamburrino's jam.
In the opening 10 minutes of the game, the Blues got eight from Kash Lang, which included a pair of threes, to build a seven-point lead in the first quarter. His effort was bested by nine points from Alfonso Reyes in three minutes off the bench in the opening frame as the Spaniard made four buckets, including an and-one.
CBC clawed back in the second with Dane-Dre Anglin and Camden MacDougall combining for 14 points, with the visitors taking a 45-44 lead to halftime, but Capilano made their third-quarter stand and took control of the ballgame.
Capilano was without starting point guard Peter Li on Friday, but got nice contributions from Afu Bullock, who moved into the starting lineup and was supported off the bench by Justin Pamintuan, Aidan Underwood and Oliver Seto, who all played meaningful minutes.
Lang finished with 18 points and 10 boards for his second double-double of the season, while Sukhraj Garcha had 17 and five while handing out four dimes.
The Blues and Bearcats play again Saturday in a 7 p.m. start.
