CapU Blues sports info
With their second consecutive sweep on the road, the Capilano Blues reached 17 wins on the season and have matched the team's all-time single-season mark for victories.
The Blues took both ends of their Friday-Saturday set at Camosun College in Victoria Feb. 6 and 7, losing just two sets in the process. Capilano took Friday's opener 3-1 (set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20) and had the same result Saturday afternoon (set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23).
Nnya Mbaoma's 17 kills Friday paced the Blues while Sibby Bos recorded eight from her middle blocker position, which gave gave the Blues' offence a varied look and prevented Camosun from keying too heavily on any one part of the net. Annika Kuznik chalked up a season-high four aces.
At setter, duties were shared once again between Mollie English and Alix Schewaga with the pair successfully keeping the Chargers defence guessing.
On Saturday, the first two sets were tight with the Blues securing a 2-0 lead before dropping the third set by nine points, the largest margin of victory in a set for either team all weekend. The presence of Blues veteran Natalie Rourke was a game-changer Saturday as the fourth-year middle blocker registered seven stuff blocks, repeatedly frustrating Chargers hitters in contests at the net.
Mbaoma and Abby Betker each had 14 kills Saturday while libero Kris Young kept rallies alive with her 14 digs.
Saturday's victory improved the Blues' record to 17-1, the win total equaling a Blues record set three times previously (2011-12, 2014-15 and 2016-17). Noteworthy in that is each of those previous records were in seasons with 24 games as opposed to the current campaign of 20 matches.
The Blues wrap the regular season at home Feb. 13 and 14 with games against the College of the Rockies. Friday's game is a 6 p.m. start with Saturday a 4 p.m. opening serve. Capilano's graduating group of seven players will be honoured Saturday after the game.
