While the season opener didn’t go at all the way they wanted, the Capilano Blues responded the right way, earning a 3-2 win Sunday over the Langara College Falcons in the home opener at Lillooet park.
Sebastian Cirotto netted a brace for the Blues in the second half. The third-year striker scored first from the penalty spot and later slotted home the game-winner, running onto a cross from Zach Gabrys before depositing it into the left side of the net in the 66th minute.
Gabrys also impressed in his home debut, scoring the opening goal of the game after a nice through ball from Tate Davidson. With Langara keeper Elijah Brown out to challenge, Gabrys deftly moved to his right, leaving him an open net for his first goal in Blues colours.
Cirotto’s PK goal in the first minute of the second half put Capilano up a pair before Zyanh Adlam got the Falcons on the board, heading home a loose ball after a free kick.
The decisive goal from Cirotto made it 3-1 but Langara was awarded a penalty shortly after and David Zegarra Rodriguez converted to get the Falcons within one but they couldn’t equalize.
Capilano’s performance Saturday was a welcome one after suffering a 5-0 setback Saturday at Langara’s home park. Sunday’s bounce-back effort showed coach Steve Millar the kind of character he wanted to see after a humbling defeat Saturday.
Also making home debuts Sunday were big rookie striker Campbell Grimston, who got on the park late but immediately made an impact with a run down the left side, and forward Aydin Ali who got on the end of a Cirotto cross in the first half, heading it on goal but Brown snagged it.
Next up for the Blues is a home game Saturday, Sept. 13 with the Vancouver Island University Mariners paying a visit to North Vancouver. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.
