For the first time ever, the Capilano University Blues Women's Volleyball team completed a weekend sweep against the Vancouver Island Mariners. It was one of the most dramatic victories we've seen in a long time at the CSW on Saturday afternoon, storming back from a 2–0 deficit to defeat the defending PACWEST champions, the Vancouver Island University Mariners, in a five-set thriller (20-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10).
Coming off Friday’s 3–1 win, Capilano’s first victory over VIU since 2017, the Blues knew a weekend sweep would demand their best volleyball of the year. The Mariners came out sharp, proving immediately why they remain one of the most disciplined and dangerous teams in the conference. Both programs share a fast, aggressive style of volleyball, and the opening sets were marked by unbelievable rallies that had the CSW crowd going wild. Former Blues player Grace Brisebois caused problems early for Capilano, producing tough service runs and helping tilt the momentum toward the Mariners in the opening sets. Despite strong moments from the Blues, VIU closed the first two sets 25–20 and 25–19, putting the Blues in a deep 0-2 hole.
The energy inside the gym shifted dramatically in the third. The Blues refused to let the game slip, showing urgency, composure, and belief as they began their comeback. Sibby Bos and Natalie Rourke were forces at the net, recording crucial blocks that stalled VIU’s offence. Bos finished the afternoon with 7 kills and 3 aces, while Rourke was all over the court with 7 kills, 6 blocks and 2 aces, giving The Blues the spark they desperately needed. VIU was forced to burn multiple timeouts as the Blues' momentum grew, as they took the set 25-19 to stay alive.
The fourth set featured some of the best volleyball of the weekend. The Blues continued winning long rallies and outworking the Mariners defensively. Annika Kuznik, who ended the night with 10 kills and 3 blocks, delivered highlight-reel plays, including multiple diving efforts that reignited the crowd. Her stability and heavy workload were crucial in the win. The Blues were able to close the set 25–20, completing the comeback push and setting the stage for a winner-take-all fifth set.
With everything on the line for this top of the table fifth set battle, the Blues seized control early. Nnya Mbaoma proved once again why she is one of the best players in the league offensively and dominated with 17 kills and 3 blocks. Abby Betker continued her consistent form from Friday night, also dominating, adding 17 kills, 1 block and 3 aces. Capilano’s depth came through when it mattered most, with contributions coming from every position on the floor. As the set tightened, the Blues remained composed, eventually securing the game with a decisive final push to take the fifth set 15-10 and complete the thrilling comeback victory.
Saturday’s win was a statement showing the rest of the league that the Blues have what it takes to go really far this year. They showed resilience, depth, tactical growth, and a collective belief that has defined their season so far. With back-to-back victories over the reigning champions and contributions across the roster, the Blues have established themselves as one of the top contenders in the PACWEST.
The Blues will carry that momentum into their next matchup at home next Friday, November 21st, at 6 pm against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, looking to build on one of the most memorable weekends in recent program history. Come out and support the Blues at home, and if you can't be there, make sure to tune into the livestream.
