In a season-opening weekend where scoring was a bit of a chore for both teams, the Capilano Blues rebounded to take the second game for a road split at Douglas College.
Behind 21 points from Maddy Coffin, the Blues earned a 65-44 victory Saturday after sustaining a 60-54 setback in Friday’s season opener.
Coffin, the fifth-year senior, led the Blues in scoring both nights but was especially effective in the second game of the weekend as she drilled four triples, including two in the third quarter. Capilano built a 20-point halftime lead, holding the Royals to just 14 points over the first 20 minutes.
Cassiel Penalosa and Barcha Hnizdilova cleaned the glass Saturday to the tune of 14 and 11 rebounds respectively while Mia Parkin had nine. Capilano outrebounded Douglas 50-31 Saturday after losing the board battle 36-26 in Friday’s game.
A slow start Friday cost the Blues as they shot just 2-of-14 in the opening frame for just nine points while each of the Douglas starters got on the scoresheet in the first 10 minutes, creating an early double-digit lead. Capilano outscored Douglas the rest of the way but couldn’t overcome the sluggish opening to the game.
Neither team shot the ball very well Friday, especially from beyond the three-point line where Capilano was 1-for-12 and Douglas was 4-for-20. The early season rust was evident from the free-throw line as well as the Blues were 48.4 per cent from the stripe and Douglas was 52.6 per cent effective.
Despite the offensive challenges, strong games were turned in by Coffin (16 points), Hnizdilova with 10 points and seven boards and Parkin with 12 and five. CapU’s bench chipped in just five points Friday.
Capilano has a bye for the Oct. 24-25 weekend and has their home opener on Halloween in a 6 p.m. tipoff against Camosun College.
