Returning for their second weekend back at home, the Capilano University Blues faced the visiting Vancouver Island Mariners, yet despite their efforts, the Blues couldn't close the gap with the final score being 5-2.
The Saturday afternoon matchup favored the Mariners in the first half with four of their five goals being scored. Although they had played a majority of the game on their own side of the pitch, this didn't tone down the aggressiveness of the Blues. Midfielder Sophie Pather and defender Lauren Grey continued to be forceful on the pitch. Kai Belbin also demonstrated great ball control when pushing the Mariners out of the Blues half of the field.
The second half, however, showcased the true relentlessness of the Blues. First-year forward Kianna Sardari scored both of Capilano's goals. Her first goal in the 49th minute landed into the left side of the Mariners net, assisted by midfielder Leah Herald who had a great forward pass ahead to her. Sardari quickly scored again for the Blues in the 53rd minute, this time assisted by Pather off a rebound. Sardari currently leads the Blues in scoring for this season.
Defender Isabella Bolognese was a mainstay for the Blues the whole match, particularly in her unyielding battle with Mariners #22 Jade Dillabough. With her non-stop hustle, Bolognese warded off any easy chances for the Mariners. Brynn Chubb and Megan Ferguson also added some valuable minutes. Goalkeeper Rachel Laakmann made some impressive saves throughout the match.
The Blues next matchup is at the Douglas College Royals on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12 p.m. Capilano will then travel to Nanaimo to meet up again with the Mariners on Sept. 20 and 21. The next home game at Lillooet Park will be on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. against Douglas.
