The Capilano Blues edged out the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Saturday night, securing a crucial 72–63 victory that lifts them into sole possession of third place heading into the Christmas break. After a decisive win in Friday’s matchup, this rematch carried a completely different weight and a much tighter margin, as CBC’s key forward Elissa Vreugdenhil returned, and they were determined to regain momentum in the standings.
From the opening minutes, it was clear that this would not be the same game as the night before. CBC brought more size, physicality, and composure, forcing Capilano into tough shots and earning several early calls that left the Blues bench visibly frustrated. The Bearcats added interior presence, chipped away at the Blues usual advantages around the rim and created a much more evenly matched contest.
As the game settled, Capilano found its rhythm and at the center of that shift was Barcha Hnizdilova. The guard delivered one of the best performances of the season from anyone on the Blues roster, hitting 50% from behind the arc with a career high 6 three-balls, putting up a game high in shots taken and shots made. She finished with 28 points, putting on a clinic on offence and also stretching the floor to open the game for her teammates.
Lucia Lopez continued her efficient form from Friday's performance, going perfect from the field in the first half and finishing with 12 points on 6-7 from the field and 8 rebounds, once again proving that her presence around the basket remains one of the Blues most reliable weapons.
As the second half progressed, the Blues tightened their defensive rotations and regained their edge on rebounds. CBC pushed hard, hitting some important threes and refusing to let Capilano pull away too far. The Blues responded with poise each time the momentum tilted. Maddy Coffin also had another strong performance, getting 7 rebounds and contributing to the steady offence with 12 points on the night. Mia Parkin pitched in with 5 points and a game-high 7 assists. Composed ball movement across the roster helped the Blues maintain a narrow advantage.
Capilano not only completed the weekend sweep but also strengthened their position near the top of the PACWEST standings heading into the league’s midseason holiday break. They head into the break with confidence and momentum, excited to return in January and ready to keep building on the foundation they set in the first half of the season.
