A day after a last-second opposition goal changed the outcome, the Capilano Blues scored in the dying moments themselves to grab a 1-0 road victory over the Douglas College Royals.
In the 89th minute, Sebastian Cirotto evaded the last Douglas defender and slotted the ball home past a sliding Matthew Miller in the Douglas goal to deliver the win for the Blues.
This came less than 24 hours after a late goal by the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners snagged a tie with the Blues on CapU’s turf.
Sunday at Douglas, damp conditions and rugged physical play from both sides kept the game scoreless for almost the entirety of the match. The game-winner came after the teams volleyed the ball back and forth in midfield before some good work by Kael Bello and Aydin Ali won possession for Capilano. Ali then skipped a long ball for Cirotto that skidded under the foot of a Douglas defender and Cirotto did the rest, poking the ball past the final defender before placing his shot past Miller for his fourth goal in as many games and second game-winning goal.
Almost nine minutes of extra time was added due to some delays in the second half. It was a stressful finale to the contest for Capilano as the Royals desperately pushed for the equalizer with several extended periods of possession in the Blues end but goalkeeper Graydon Sherle guarded his goal effectively for his first clean sheet of the campaign.
Capilano’s next action will be a pair of games at VIU Sept. 20 and 21. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts. The next Blues home game is Saturday, Sept. 20 against Douglas.
