Entering Saturday’s game at Okanagan College, Maddy Coffin needed 30 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.
Coffin was more than up to it, going off for 35 points to match a career high in a 87-68 win that gave CapU the weekend sweep after a 90-56 win on Friday night.
The fifth-year veteran forward served notice she was dialed in early Saturday as she put up 14 in the first quarter on 6-of-7 shooting. She made multiple buckets each quarter and got plenty of attempts from the stripe, going 9-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Capilano was never in danger Saturday building a 15-point lead at half time with Barcha Hnizdilova contributing eight points and five boards over the first 20 minutes.
Lucia Lopez continued a fine weekend with a double-double Saturday on 14 points and 10 rebounds as she started her first two games of the season.
In Friday’s opener, Lopez paced the Blues with 21 points while grabbing four boards and a block. The 6-foot-1 Spanish international’s weekend included 35 points and 14 rebounds; her step forward could be a huge development for Capilano when they move into the second half of the season.
Hnizdilova came two assists short of a triple-double Saturday with 15 points, 13 boards and eight assists. Sereena Hothi had six points and four boards in 14 minutes off the bench.
With Saturday’s showing, Coffin became just the second Blues player to reach quadruple digits, with only the program’s all-time leader – Carmelle M’Bikata – still ahead of her. Coffin currently has 1,005 career points, with M’Bikata in top spot at 1,163.
Next up for the Blues is a tough test with Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats paying a visit to CapU Nov. 28 and 29. CBC has occupied the top spot in the CCAA national rankings the last three weeks but were defeated by Douglas College 69-43 on Nov. 22.
Capilano and CBC tip off at 6 p.m. on Friday and at 5 p.m. on Nov. 29.
Blues men’s soccer will be raising their PACWEST provincial championship banner Friday at 7:30 p.m., just before the men’s basketball game.
