The top-seed Capilano Blues took care of business Friday evening, recording a straight-sets win over the Douglas College Royals (set scores: 25-21, 25-9, 25-20) to put them into Saturday's gold-medal match against the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.
Throughout the match, Blues setter Mollie English was able to make use of all her options to keep the Royals guessing and was later named Player of the Game for her work running the Capilano offence. She went to PACWEST Player of the Year Abby Betker with regularity early on to set the tone but got some swings for the middle blockers with Nnya Mbaoma also keeping the Douglas defence honest from her power spot.
After claiming the first set, Capilano put Douglas under their thumb in the second frame, preventing the Royals from even reaching double-digits. Capilano was on their way to another dominant set in the third but had trouble putting the Royals away for good as they were stuck on serve receive at match point for several Royals serves with Lauren Bowman at the service line. Capilano coach Sue Soolsma utilized a late timeout to reset and the Blues finally got the finishing point they needed to advance to the PACWEST final.
Saturday's gold-medal match will see the Blues take on the No. 2-seed Mariners who dispatched the Camosun Chargers in straight sets in the first game of the tournament, which is being hosted at Columbia Bible College. The tournament champion will be the lone team to qualify for the CCAA National Championship this year as the PACWEST has just one berth on the women's side.
First serve in the final is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
