NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. — Capilano University Rolls Past CBC in Straight Sets, Extends Win Streak to 5-1 at Home
The Capilano University Blues closed out their three-week home stand in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, sweeping the Columbia Bible College Bearcats 3–0 (30–28, 25–15, 25–22) to complete a 2–0 weekend and improve to 5–3 on the season. The victory also capped a dominant stretch on their home court, where the Blues went 5–1 with statement wins over VIU, CBC, and a split against Camosun.
Set 1: A Comeback Sparked by Tiegen—and Finished by Buehler
The opening frame delivered the most drama of the night. CBC controlled much of the set and held what looked like a decisive 24–20 advantage before Capilano head coach Irvan Brar called a timeout. What followed was a surge that shifted the entire match.
Third-year outside hitter Luke Tiegen ignited the push with a sharp cross-court kill to bring the Blues within three. A service error from CBC and an attacking error trimmed the gap to 24–23, forcing the Bearcats to burn a timeout of their own. Out of the break, Teigen elevated for a momentum-swinging block to tie the score at 24–24.
The teams traded points to 28–28, but the moment of the set belonged to second-year outside hitter Dylan Buehler, subbed in with the set on the line. Buehler delivered two wicked, high-pressure serves—one leading to a stuff block and the other producing an overpass that Capilano promptly buried to steal the opener 30–28.
Set 2: Blues Roll Behind Serves and Steady Offense
The second set saw the Blues seize control early and never let CBC back into it. Dominant serving, efficient side-out play, and a surging block presence stretched the lead steadily before Capilano closed out a commanding 25–15 win.
And once again, it was Buehler who sealed the set—this time with back-to-back aces, electrifying the home crowd and putting CapU comfortably ahead 2–0.
Set 3: CBC Pushes Late, but Blues Defense Holds Strong
CBC responded with their best volleyball of the match in the third, going point-for-point and eventually pulling ahead 18–17. But a Bearcats service error cracked the door open, and the Blues stepped through. Capilano scored three straight to take a 20–19 lead and force a CBC timeout, then rode strong defense and a balanced attack the rest of the way to close out the match 25–22.
It marked not just a sweep on the night, but a sweep of the weekend series.
Stat Leaders: Tiegen Steady, Masztak and Wander Impactful, Buehler Breaks Out
Luke Tiegen led the Blues offensively with 11 kills and a block, showcasing his ability to score from anywhere on the court.
Xavier Masztak had a well-rounded match, finishing with 7 kills, 2 blocks, and an ace.
Shub Wander provided a serving spark with 3 aces to go along with 4 kills.
And in the biggest storyline of the night, Dylan Buehler delivered a breakout performance—subbing in at crucial moments and finishing with 5 kills, 2 aces, and a block. His late-set poise was pivotal in securing both the first and second frames.
Capilano’s depth also shone through, with contributions from up and down the roster:
-
Quentin Middleton – 4 kills
-
Reese Nowotny – 3 kills
-
Kingsley Ndu – 3 kills
Defensively, the Blues were relentless. Their ability to dig tough swings and extend rallies repeatedly wore down the Bearcats and created transition opportunities that swung the match in Capilano’s favor.
Looking Ahead
The Blues now hit the road to wrap up the fall semester, traveling to Cranbrook next weekend for a major early-season test against the College of the Rockies Avalanche—the top team in the conference at 7–1 and currently ranked #2 in the country. Capilano, sitting at #14 nationally, will enter the matchup as underdogs but with momentum on their side after a strong 5–1 home stand and a four-game win streak.
With their depth emerging, defensive identity sharpening, and young talent like Buehler continuing to rise, the Blues will look to carry their upward trajectory into a challenging weekend against one of the nation’s elite programs.
